Cruise Away!  (C. Long)  The wife of one of my father’s friends, sitting on their boat, once said, “I want to go somewhere and DO something.”  He replied, “I’m where I want to be and I’m doing what I want to do.”  It became an adage in our family.  I always thought there was a song there somewhere.  It went through several permutations before emerging as this one.

Sample Lyrics

Son of a Son of a Sailor (J. Buffett)   While not strictly true of  my brother and  me (one grandfather was a physician, the other a merchant)  this song definitely applies to our  sons.

Sea Fever (J. Masefield/Tim Harrison)  I decided to set one of my favorite poems to music, then realized it must have already been done.  A quick internet search turned up a lot of really dark and depressing versions.  This arrangement, by Gabriola Island resident Tim Harrison, was the only one that captured the positive, optimistic feeling I get from the poem.

Sample Lyrics

Sunday Sun  (N. Diamond) At first, this song might seem to have nothing to do with boating.  But it has great significance for me, being the name I bestowed upon my first boat, an Ericson 27.  Listen to the chorus and you’ll understand.

Sample

One Particular Harbour (J. Buffett, B. Holcomb)  One of Jimmy Buffett’s lesser-known songs, this one resonates with all of us who love boating.  We all have that one special place to which we always return.

Sample

Jamaica Farewell (Lord Burgess)  An old standby, eternally loved by all sailors.

Winds of Juan de Fuca (C. Long)  I wrote this song in 1985 before Victoria’s Swiftsure Race.  I was crewing on my brother’s  S2 9.1, High Risk.  We didn’t finish DFL.  We didn’t finish at all!

Sample Lyrics

The Cruise from Hell (C. Long)  Everything referenced in this song is based on  my own experiences or those of close friends.  There could easily have been ten more verses!

Sample Lyrics

Long Way Back (C. Long)  Another song I wrote a long time ago.  It never seemed quite right so, for this CD, I added another verse and changed the tune slightly.  It works better now, for me at least!

Sample Lyrics

Two Piña Coladas (S. Camp, B. Hill, S. Mason)  Somehow, this song evokes images of hanging out on the back deck in some warm, sunny anchorage somewhere in BC,  most likely in that “one particular harbor.”

The Men That Don’t Fit In (R. Service, C. Long)  I love the poetry of Robert Service.  I’ve set a couple of his classics to music.  This one is more obscure, but it speaks to me as someone who never quite did what I perhaps could have done with the life I was given.

Sample Lyrics

Light on the Water (TR Ritchie)  TR Ritchie wrote this one when he lived in Seattle many years ago.  I’ve always loved it and TR was kind enough to give me permission to record it.

Sample

Crossing the Bar (A. Tennyson, C. Long)  Another poem that I felt begged to be set to music.  Internet searches came up empty so I added a chorus and wrote the  music myself.

Sample Lyrics

The River (G. Brooks, V. Shaw)  When I finally check out, this is the music that I want played at whatever party they throw to celebrate my departure.
